Connect and find inspiration! Mingle with fellow artists and members for an evening of artist-led workshops inspired by the museum’s collections and exhibitions.

Join us for an evening of artmaking with local artist Risa Iwasaki Culbertson. We’ll take inspiration from Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective as we explore materials, tools, and visual expressions in monochrome. Referencing both Ha’s early works from the 1970s Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement and his inventive techniques honed over his 60+ year career, you’re invited to experiment with texture, pressure, and non-traditional tools to create your own piece of art.

Materials are provided. Members are encouraged to bring their own added materials and supplies to enhance their project. Please consider the limited dry-time available when choosing your materials.

Important: Please do not bring the following items to the museum: plant/botanical material, feathers, fur, glitter, sand, aerosols, or permanent markers and spray paint. For a reference list of museum policies, please visit our website.

In this 2.5 hour class you’ll learn how to needle felt and learn tips and tricks on how to make pieces, faster. “AYCE” class means make as many as you can during that time (with everyone going home with at least 2 plus extra materials) and transform them into magnets and bag charms so you can show them off on the daily. Booksmith is one of my favorite shops here in SF and has been selling my Papa Llama card line since the beginning (almost 14 years ago!) So when they asked me to bring FREE DIY activities for the celebration I was so excited. Wearable Wins is a 30 day, daily challenge project taking time to savor our accomplishments, challenges we overcame, storytelling… all the things! We had a blast making puppets and playing with real shadow puppets last round so come join us for part 2 where we get to play on the stage! Try shadow puppetry on a screen, play with stop motion stations, and draw your own background for a scroll Crankie. Don’t have a puppet? No worries, we have plenty of supplies to create one on the spot! Introvert friendly, we’re just playing, getting “on stage” in front of people is not necessary!

Ready to jump into the soothing and satisfying world of needle felting? In this beginner-friendly felting workshop, professional multimedia artist Risa Culbertson will introduce you to the fundamentals of needle felting and hard launch your journey into the vibrant world of fiber arts!

Risa will teach you three essential techniques: needle felting wool on wool, felting over a form, and felting directly on fabric. Using these techniques, you’ll create your very own furry creature inspired by San Francisco’s iconic wildlife such as pigeons, Telegraph Hill parrots, racoons, coyotes, and more. By the end of the class, you’ll have a solid foundation in these versatile techniques, which can be applied to larger and more detailed projects. Plus, you’ll head home with your very own felting kit to keep the creative adventures going!
