It’s No Picnic

My work throughout 2023 was centered around grief. Trying to process, channel, and create space to sit with it. I noticed how the holes in my heart settled into my body and a familiar feeling emerged of longing for any moments of light and joy in my life again.

It’s No Picnic came from wanting to create the light, whimsy, and silliness I longed for.  Often times, a body of work will reveal its lessons only during the creation or completion. It was while putting together the deconstructed iced tea where I noticed how the components omitted the key ingredient. The ice cream cone isn’t in its proper state, the party plate of deviled eggs sit individually. Bowls of pasta and blueberries sit suspended away from each other.

I sat back and sighed. The collection I wanted as joyful and light was indeed very much rooted in grief. Forever changed and with it came a new appreciation for small joys, kindness, and connection.

Life might not be a picnic but, we can still search for and savor those moments when it is.
